The United States Peace Corps is a volunteer organization started by former President JFK in 1961. Its aim is to send educated young Americans overseas to assist developing countries in the following sectors: Health, Education, Environment, Community Economic Development, Youth Development and Agriculture.
Since the organization began, nearly 220,000 Americans have served abroad in 140 countries.
Peace Corps has 3 Organizational Goals:
Goal #1. To help people of interested countries in meeting their need for trained men and women.
Goal #2. To help promote a better understanding of Americans on the part of the peoples served.
Goal #3. To help promote a better understanding of other peoples on the part of Americans.
To me, these goals mean- to help people who need and want our help, to engage in cross-cultural exchange while serving abroad, and to bring home and share knowledge & experiences gained overseas.
